Now our country is self-sufficient in food-grains. It is now in a position to export surplus food-grains and some other agricultural products to other countries.

    Indian Agriculture
In India, more than 70% of the population is depending on agriculture in one form or the other. The present population is about 1000 million which is expected to stabilize at about 1500 million by the middle of present century.
Importance of Agriculture in Indian Economy
Importance of agriculture can be measured by the share of agriculture in national income and employment pattern etc. Knowing the importance of agriculture, agriculture sector can be related with the industrial sector.

Share of Agriculture in National Income

Agricultural share in India’s GDP was 14.02 per cent on 2010-11. India’s GDP shown robust growth (never less than 5 per cent since 1990-91) which shows that non-agricultural sectors (particularly to service sector) have grown at the expense of agriculture. This is a trend that takes place the fundamentals of the Indian economy closer to the developed economies.

Importance of Agriculture for Industrial Development

Indian Agriculture has been source of supply of raw materials to our leading industry. Cotton, Jute, textile industry, Sugar, vanaspathi and plantation depend upon agriculture directly.
There are many other industries which depend on agriculture in indirect manner. Many of our small and cottage industries, handloom, oil industry, rice mills and sugar mills depend upon agriculture for their raw materials. They account for 50 per cent of income generated in manufacturing sector in India.
However in recent years the importance of food processing industry is being recognised both for generation of income and employment opportunities.

Role of Agriculture in the field of International Trade

In total 70 per cent of India’s exports comes from agricultural sector. The increased exports pay for the imported oil, machinery, etc.
These are not uniform in all countries. They vary from country to country. Developed countries use these to minimise import from developing countries.
To meet these challenges, Indian agricultural and agricultural processing sector have to adopt measures like Hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP) and Total quality management (TQM).

Importance of Monsoon on Indian Agriculture

In India, Monsoon refers to the rainy season. The humid south-west monsoon winds causes plenty of rainfall during the period between early June and October.
A large portion of Indian farmers still depends upon rain-fall to carry out the agricultural activities. Since, agriculture is one of the most important constituent on Indian economy (contributing around 16 percent of its total GDP), monsoon season has an indirect impact on its economy as well.
India has a tropical monsoon type of climate. So here the temperature in the summer months is high and the rainfall is heavy. High temperature and heavy rainfall in the summer months are important for the growth of different types of kharif crops in different parts of India.
Unlike other countries in high latitudes, India enjoys long hours of sunshine even during the winter months.
The amount of rainfall is the most important determinant of the type of crop raised. Wet crops are raised in wet zone and dry crops in the dry zone.

    • Crops like rice, jute, sugarcane, etc. require high temperature and heavy rainfall for their cultivation.
    • Crops like wheat, barley etc. require moderate temperature and rainfall.
    • Rubber trees require uniformly high temperature and regular rainfall all the year round.

A large number of farmers depend upon monsoon-rains to meet the food requirement of their family. They engage in agricultural activities not to sell the crops, but for their own needs.
Normal rainfall is essential for adequate agricultural output. In a large country like India, it is essential to maintain the food prices. Food inflation may destabilize the entire nation. The food prices depend upon the agricultural output.
In spite of the introduction of improved irrigation methods, around 40% of our cropped area still entirely depends upon rain-water.

Role of Agriculture in Economic Planning

Agriculture is main support for India’s transport system. Transport systems like railway and roadways secure bulk of business from movement of agriculture goods and international trade is mostly in agriculture products. Many other economic activities like food grain business, dairying and fruit marketing seed and agricultural machinery etc. also depends upon agriculture. Economic condition of govt, to large extent depend upon prosperity of agriculture.
It is therefore clear that agriculture is the back bone of Indian economy and prosperity of agriculture largely influence the Indian Economy.
