WBCSMadeEasy: When and how did the inspiration and idea of joining civil service come in your mind?

Mr. Sayantan Ghosh: The first thought came into early teenage but I was going with the flow till my masters. But I seriously gave it a thought during the last year of post graduation.

WBCSMadeEasy: Tell us something about yourself? Educational Qualification, Marks/Division/Class, schooling…..

Mr. Sayantan Ghosh: I don’t want to be judged by my marks ever. I was not the topper through my academics but whatever I learnt , I acquired that knowledge into myself. I was not considered a bad student. I maintained star or 1st division whatever the benchmark was throughout my student life but didn’t give much serious thought about the top position . I had love for Biology , so I pursued Botany but soon lost interest after getting into that outdated syllabus. I pursued post graduation in Biotechnology from Jadavpur then. I cracked CSIR NET JRF during my last year in 2014 June NET.
I wanted to take a break and find out what to do in the bigger picture. I came back to my hometown Berhampore & went for WBCS. I was not much serious during prelims but after qualifying for MAIN 2014, I pushed the paddle & ultimately cracked it.

WBCSMadeEasy: What factors did you consider before selecting your optionals? What were they?

Mr. Sayantan Ghosh: I went for Anthropology as I had genetics or the Biology portions under my grip & it is a scoring subject too.

WBCSMadeEasy: How did you sustain the study-momentum throughout the year?

    Mr. Sayantan Ghosh: Answered already.

WBCSMadeEasy: How many hours did you study per day? How many months did it take you to complete the core syllabus of Compulsory and optional subjects?

Mr. Sayantan Ghosh: I was a bit erratic but I love to read . I did choose the long nights.Answered the rest portion already.

WBCSMadeEasy: Did u use internet, was it effective? Which newspapers & magazines you went through?

Mr. Sayantan Ghosh: I love internet. I used it to the fullest since my preparation of NET. I continued using it for WBCS too. Whatever I wanted to know after reading or in confusion – I simply google it. I don’t know why so many aspirants these days wanted the answer from directly us while they have google in their pockets.

WBCSMadeEasy: Were you doing any other job during preparation?

    Mr. Sayantan Ghosh: No.

WBCSMadeEasy: Which newspapers & magazines you went through?

Mr. Sayantan Ghosh: I was very erratic. I read Anandabazar since my childhood & I am a voracious reader but I didn’t use HINDU, PD, YOJANA or things like those. I googled whatever I needed though I like Achievers.

WBCSMadeEasy: Did u take coaching? How was the experience?

Mr. Sayantan Ghosh: No. Purely self study. That’s why I know the looks & corners of this game & did choose to mentor some aspirants while being one of the youngest cadre of 2014 batch.

WBCSMadeEasy: What about Interview in WBCS? Was the board cordial?

Mr. Sayantan Ghosh: My interview was a strange one as it had 90% English vocabulary puzzles with bits of questions from my background. Most probably Saidul Haque sir chaired of the board.

WBCSMadeEasy: Plz suggest some good books for pre, comp, optional.

Mr. Sayantan Ghosh: Ample suggestions present so don’t want to increase the confusion .

WBCSMadeEasy: What should be the strategy for cracking this exam? What message you want to give to all aspirants?

Mr. Sayantan Ghosh: Keep it simple.

WBCSMadeEasy: Anything else u want to share?

Mr. Sayantan Ghosh: Focus on understanding the topic rather than jumping from one heavyweight book to another one.

WBCSMadeEasy: Was it ur 1st attempt? If not what about previous ones? You are from which batch and what was your rank in WBCS Exam (Plz don’t mind)?

Mr. Sayantan Ghosh: Yes. It was my 1st attempt.

WBCSMadeEasy: Do you suggest anything on changed pattern of WBCS Exam like how to choose optional subject, how to study for main exam now , what should be the strategy etc.?

    Mr. Sayantan Ghosh: Already said.
