WBCSMadeEasy: When and how did the inspiration and idea of joining civil service come in your mind?

Ms. Puja Debnath: Most of the major problems in Bengal or India are related to its societal makeup…So I wanted to bring some changes into the society… ie Change for Good.. I was just looking for the right platform for that.. While working in Wipro Technologies as a Software Developer,I got involved into Wipro’s CSR activities and met some successful Civil Servants and that’s became my turning point.

WBCSMadeEasy: Tell us something about yourself? Educational Qualification, Marks/Division/Class, schooling…..

Ms. Puja Debnath: Basically I am a very pragmatic person and believe in Bentham’s philosophy-“Greater Happiness for a Greater Number” in case of public service.
    Educational Qualification:
    1. Madhyamik- Year-2003; Marks -705 (88.13%)
    2. Higher Secondary- Year-2005; Marks – 893 (89.3%)
    3. Graduation- BTech in Computer Science & Engineering; Year- 2010; DGPA- 8.71

#Note: I did my schooling from Government Schools in rural belt and secured rank in 10th,10+2 and finally in WBCS examination also (Rank -8).. So to mesuccess depends on our determination and our capability, not on the so-called brand values of today’s education..

WBCSMadeEasy: What factors did you consider before selecting your optionals? What were they?

Ms. Puja Debnath: Optional is a vital part of this examination.. Pls do endure the following things while choosing optional subject..
*Should have general interest in that subject.
*Subject should be scoring in recent times.
*Check if it covers larger part of GS.
*Check previous years papers to have some idea.
    #My optional – Sociology.

WBCSMadeEasy: How did you sustain the study-momentum throughout the year?

Ms. Puja Debnath: Basically I am very much determined and confident about my vision. So my passion for my workkeepsme sustainable. And ofcourse one should be disciplined too.:)

WBCSMadeEasy: How many hours did you study per day? How many months did it take you to complete the core syllabus of Compulsory and optional subjects?

Ms. Puja Debnath: 8-10 hrs of regular study is enough for this preparation. I took 6 months to complete the syllabus.

WBCSMadeEasy: Did u use internet, was it effective? Which newspapers & magazines you went through?

Ms. Puja Debnath: I used Internet extensively and it was worthy.

WBCSMadeEasy: Were you doing any other job during preparation?

Ms. Puja Debnath: Yes, I was working as a Software Developer in Wipro Technologies while preparing for Civil Services.

WBCSMadeEasy: Which newspapers & magazines you went through?

Ms. Puja Debnath:The Hindu, Indian Express, DownToEarth (selectively for Environmental news).
    EPW, Frontline.

WBCSMadeEasy: Did u take coaching? How was the experience?

Ms. Puja Debnath: No, I preferred Self-Study over any conventional coaching… And internet was the saver for me…
But yes I took few Mock Interview sessions in 2015 from “SUCCESS/WBCSMadeEasy” Naktala centre.

WBCSMadeEasy: What about Interview in WBCS? Was the board cordial?

Ms. Puja Debnath: Yes, the board was much cordial to me..It was a kind of healthy discussion rather than a rapid fire session.
About interview, one thing I can say- “Be True”to yourself and the board also.

WBCSMadeEasy: Plz suggest some good books for pre, comp, optional.

Ms. Puja Debnath: I mostly followed standard books such as—
    1. Polity—Laxmikanth
    2.Economy—Ramesh Singh
    3. Geography—GC Leong, Majid Hussain
    4. History—Bipan Chandra etc.

WBCSMadeEasy: What should be the strategy for cracking this exam? What message you want to give to all aspirants?

Ms. Puja Debnath: #My strategy is very simple..
    *Courage
    *Determination
    *Hard Work
    *Confidence
    *Perseverance
** Plan properly?Execute the plan religiously.

WBCSMadeEasy: Anything else u want to share?

Ms. Puja Debnath: My achievement is dedicated to all the “Kanyashrees”.
*To me securing a top rank(Rank 8th) in Civil Services is “Not the End in Itself”, rather it’s a “Means to an End” ie to leave a positive impacton the lives of many in need.

WBCSMadeEasy: Was it ur 1st attempt? If not what about previous ones? You are from which batch and what was your rank in WBCS Exam (Plz don’t mind)?

Ms. Puja Debnath: This was my 3rd attempt.
WBCS 2016- Rank-8 (#Rank-1 among the girls); WBCS Executive Service.
WBCS 2015-Rank-63; Registration and Stamp Revenue Service.
WBCS 2014- Revenue Officer at Irrigation & Waterways Department.

WBCSMadeEasy: Do you suggest anything on changed pattern of WBCS Exam like how to choose optional subject, how to study for main exam now , what should be the strategy etc.?

Ms. Puja Debnath: On the changed pattern of syllabus, one should prepare for Preliminary, Mains and Interview in a holistic manner. Each stage is interrelated to the next stage and a coherent preparation will be helpful in that scenario.

    Thank you…..

Madam it will be more helpful if you give our WBCS RTI mark sheet rather than your Graduation or hS marks .all we know that UPSC OR PSC DOES NOT set any standard to give this exam any one can give, who is graduated.
