We are happy to share a true story of one such person who reached the milestone that most of us want to touch. He is Dibyendu Shekhar Mahanty, 14th rank holder of WBCS Executive, 2004 and served as WBCS officer (BDO) in various Blocks of Bengal. He enjoyed this prestigious position for few years, after which he decided to pursue his second passion in the field of academics. He resigned and joined as an Assistant professor of Botany in 2010 at Darjeeling Govt. College. However, this choice did not rest in peace any longer, then he again took WBCS exam in 2010 only to secure 1st rank in WBCS-B group. Although Dibyendu’s story belongs to the last decade, but his experience is very much relevant today.
Tell our readers something about yourself and early education?
As a little boy I grew up in a small village called Damda in Purulia. Like any other little boy my interests wandered around playing, eating, and participating cultural activities such as music, theatre etc. I did my schooling from Purulia Sainik School. After that I attended Scottish Church College for doing B.Sc. in Botany. Then I completed my Masters from Science College in Kolkata.
Was becoming a WBCS officer childhood dream?
No, becoming a WBCS officer had never been my dream. In fact this wish had been silently germinating inside me as my maturity grew. Of course like many others, I fantasized and admired the power and prestige that came with civil services. This is a career where one can give back to nation and society at the grass root level. The services provide a humble opportunity to interact with the ordinary citizens. Although I have resigned from civil services, my respect and admiration for this sector are still as intense as before.
What is the secret of a successful WBCS preparation?  Did you prepare Prelims and Mains separately?
There is no secret, however, there is an open secret – intense yearning. Remember, positivity and self belief can bring out infinite amount of inner energy which ultimately manifests into success. Every one of us has to know how to excite that inner passion, then success will take its own course. In this mental exercise, hard work, diligence, and perseverance very organically follow.
Your second question is very crucial. Most of the candidates often commit this mistake. Actually, there is nothing called Prelims or Mains preparation. If there is anything then it is WBCS preparation. What I have meant here is that both of the preparations should go hand in hand. If your Mains preparation is not good, success in prelims has virtually no value. The time between Prelims result and WBCS Mains is so small that it is impossible to take a decent preparation. I always suggest to start preparing for Mains from day one and put last 4 to 5 months entirely for Prelims.
How do you think in your opinion has WBCS examination changed from your times?
One of the most obvious organisational changes has been the inclusion of 800 marks MCQ questions in the compulsory papers. In my opinion this is a boon in disguise – taking a solid Mains preparation will be enough for passing the prelims exam.
    Did you join any coaching?
No, I did not. I always believed in self study. I had a careful look into last 10 years questions. Identified the areas where I needed to put extra effort.
Tell us how you have prepared yourself for WBCS exam ?
I crafted my strategic plan well in advance. My preparation started with NCERT books of VI to XII standards, mainly science, history, geography and Economics. They were my holy bibles. I knew every page of these books. They made my foundation so strong that I never felt uncomfortable while reading few specialized books of next higher levels. I heaped all information in the form of layers of coherent stories stitched in a single thread. I always made notes for myself. They are very helpful in retaining information.
According to you what was the key to remember mountains of information?
Forgetting is a part of life. I was never scared when something skipped my memory. The only way to remember permanently is to go for multiple revision. Recollecting what I have read at leisure time also worked for me positively.
Do you think it is possible for an average student to qualify for WBCS exam?
Absolutely. Average students have more patience, tenacity, and will power than ‘so called’ meritorious students. This is the most valuable capital that any average student has. They have to capitalize their innate positive qualities to receive most of the dividends. This creates the biggest difference. Remember most of the WBCS officers are one of us.
How much time one should allot for studying every day ?
It really varies from candidate to candidate. There is no harm in putting more number of hours in the study schedule. What is needed is a balanced reading very much like a balanced diet. But the preparation should be consistent without interruptions.
What was your optional paper in the Mains examination?
Prior to 2014, we had to take two optional papers. During our times we had to be little strategic while selecting our second optional paper. Of course, Botany (my subject) was the other optional paper.
Do you want to share your interview experience with us?
There is a prevailing folklore among general public that people in the interview board are very scary. On the contrary, my experience of facing the interview board twice very closely has a different thing to say. I discovered interviewers as some of the nicest human beings on the planet. Remember they are there to search suitable candidates not to intimidate us. They do everything to make the candidate feel comfortable. I think this also comes as a part of their code of conduct. And most importantly they are polite and respectful. They try to see our communicating skill, how we talk and how easily we can transform our thoughts through simple words.
