When and how did the inspiration and idea of joining civil service come in your mind?
Suman Biswas:
after graduation when i visited the office of the SDO, Ranaghat. Actually we went from a club for inviting him.
I am from rural agrarian family. I used to go to Office of the BDO, Ranaghat-II which is stone throw distance away from my home. I have a strong passion after my graduation from ranaghat college (I am a pass graduate with Bio science)

What factors did you consider before selecting your optionals? What were they?
Suman Biswas:
not such factor. I have no grooming about this examination. Consulted some Group A abd group C WBCS officers from ranaghat and selected Anthropology and History. I was in dark when I selected Anthro, but later buught some very good books on anthropology. This is a vast subject and interestiing too.

And history for preliminiary exam.

How did you sustain the study-momentum throughout the year?

Suman Biswas:
group study is essential in this exam. In our friend circle we were 4 friends. now one is Dy.SP, one is AITO, one is section officer Audit and I am working as BDO. we were close friend from school level. We met every evening and often read through out deep night in a room.

How many hours did you study per day? How many months did it take you to complete the core syllabus of Compulsory and optional subjects?
Suman Biswas:
6 hours per day initially. In exam period (before 2-3 months of exam) 8-12 hours per day with some fun and consulting with friends.

Did u use internet, was it effective?
Suman Biswas:
for preliminiry exam we have not read any single books. we have a passion for quiz from childhood. we used to participate in a lots of quiz contest with friends. It help us for preliminary exam.

Which newspapers & magazines you went through?
Did u use internet, was it effective?
Suman Biswas:
Now Internet is really helpfull, but in our time it was not so widely and easily available. But we used to go to cyber cafe ocationally.

Suman Biswas:
Internet is much more effective now a days. Thank you for your new website for this exam.

No, I have had no way to get coaching, it was very expensive to me that time.
but I think coaching is effective in initial stage of study.

What about Interview in WBCS? Was the board cordial?
Suman Biswas:
Yes I have faced three type of board for group C, for group C and also for group A and fortunately in all three times I was selected by them. I got a homely condition.

for prelims- English P.K.Dey sarkar grammar, for maths - quicker maths nad KC nag-s books for secondary level, reasoning- BSC publications books on reasoning, for History- Pravatangsu maitys History books for graduation (2 parts) , geography- Basu & Moulik, science- Madhyamik standard sukhendu maity and santra-s books and Tata MC gro. GS Books.

What should be the strategy for cracking this exam?
Suman Biswas:
anthro a lots of book to be consulted like- Bengali books by R.M Sarkar (3 parts) for graduation. English book are very good like Indrani Basu Roy-s The study of man, Majumder and Madan-s social anthropoloty, Nadin husnain-s Indian anthropology and tribal india are very helpful.
one question & answer books for anthro by oriental publication which is writen by somenath basu. it is also very good.
read according to the need of this exam. go through the question pattern and solve last ten years all question papers. You should be an avid reader.
reading is the only suggestion.
there is no short-cut method for cracking this exam. basically it is for mediocar students, not for superiors.
