A WBCS officer can get posted anywhere across the state. If he or she is a WBCS(Exe) officer he will join as a Block Development Officer(BDO) and in most cases will be posted in a small town. Later with time and with every promotion they will be transferred to different places across the state and also in different departments.
Govt takes care of postings of lady officers and those who require home posting due to some reason or other like aged and sick parents etc.
At the same time please be aware of the fact that a WBCS officer will go to high posts so he/she needs to have an idea of whole west Bengal and its work culture as it varies district to district. Someone in life, suppose, get posting in and around kolkata and never goes to north Bengal. Now after 20 years of service when he becomes joint secretary /secretary of a department his side (North Bengal) will be off, thus he will face some practical issues and cannot be a good administrator as he will have to reply on others in such cases.
