    Law optional Paper- I consist of Constitutional Law, administrative law, and International Law. Law Paper II comprises, the Law of Contracts, the Law of Torts, Contemporary Legal Developments and the Law of Crimes.

    Things to Remember for Law Optional-

    In Paper I, the important parts are Constitutional and Administrative Law. You may get up to three questions on this. In Paper II, it is recommended that you give examples of recent cases. Cite relevant case examples. But, to differentiate your answers also give the philosophy behind every law.

    How to write answer for Law optional?


    Paper 1 of the Law optional has conceptual parts and less technical. It tests your ability to analyze constitution and international affairs while Paper 2 is little technical. You should write paragraph based in paper 1 and in paper 2 be to the point and precise. For contemporary legal developments one has to read them in coordination with new changes and amendments. It is better to supplement your answers with examples of cases but cases should not overshadow the main concept of the answer.

    Reading lots of books will not help you to crack this but reading selected books with sincere devotion and hard work will definitely help. Making notes and answer writing practice can help you to write relevant portions without even thinking too much. Do not avoid syllabus and go through it again and again to evaluate that what portions you have left.  Always mark differences over various topics as to what would require and amount of time for the same.

    Advantages of Law Optional

    • Law is a very basic thing. Everybody (and especially if you are preparing for WBCS) has some understanding of the fundamentals of law, like what is right, what is wrong, etc.
    • WBCS doesn’t expect you to be experts in law. You don’t need to be a law graduate to opt for the law optional in the WBCS mains.
    • It is a scoring subject.
    • It is interesting and you can learn a lot about law by reading newspapers and following cases in news.
    • There is a lot of overlap with the General Studies paper especially in polity and constitution.
