WBCSMadeEasy: When and how did the inspiration and idea of joining civil service come in your mind?

Mr. Subhabrata Chakrabarty: It was sometime around 2nd year of my undergraduate studies, when I realised what public service is all about and the need for it to be absolutely efficient. My father was a member of the civil services of the state and he has been both my inspiration as well as the medium through which I was introduced to the domain of the civil services. I realised that to ensure inclusive development of society both the individual and the government have a very crucial role to play. This realisation was the beginning of my desire to contribute constructively to social progress through efficient and responsive public service delivery and I started harnessing the idea of joining the civil services.

WBCSMadeEasy: Tell us something about yourself? Educational Qualification, Marks/Division/Class, schooling…..

Mr. Subhabrata Chakrabarty: I am, Subhabrata Chakraborty, a resident of Barrackpore.
I have done my schooling from Chandernagore Sri Aurobindo Vidyamandir, following which I completed my B.E. in Electronics & Communication Engineering form University Institute of Technology, Burdwan University. Thereafter, I did my post graduation in Nanoscience & Technology from Jadavpur University and as of November, 2016, I am pursuing a Ph.D. in Engineering from Jadvapur University.

WBCSMadeEasy: What factors did you consider before selecting your optionals? What were they?

Mr. Subhabrata Chakrabarty: I wanted to select such a subject as optional, which would be interesting as well as dynamic. At the same time, it should be helpful in preparation of the general studies part as well, given the overall weightage of the general studies in both preliminary and at the main stages. Political Science seemed to match up to all of these criteria and hence, I decided to go with it.

WBCSMadeEasy: How did you sustain the study-momentum throughout the year?

Mr. Subhabrata Chakrabarty: I believe one needs to stay focused at one’s goals and insulate oneself from what the naysayers’ opinions are. If one believes in one’s abilities and is prepared to work relentlessly towards one’s goals then sustaining the study momentum should not be a problem. I would constantly remind myself of my goal and where I stand in relation to it. I would ignore the possibilities of failure because I knew nothing is going to come of pessimistic thinking and in fact, it could actually prove to be detrimental for the preparation. Instead, I believed in myself and reminded myself constantly that efforts, however small or large these might be, never go in vain and as a matter of fact always yield proportional results. The key is BELIEVING in ONESELF.

WBCSMadeEasy: How many hours did you study per day? How many months did it take you to complete the core syllabus of Compulsory and optional subjects?

Mr. Subhabrata Chakrabarty: I would study 4-5hrs on an average in weekdays and about 8hrs on weekends and holidays. I took me about 10 months for one complete cycle of the entire syllabus of WBCS, compulsory as well as optional subjects.

WBCSMadeEasy: Did u use internet, was it effective? Which newspapers & magazines you went through?

Mr. Subhabrata Chakrabarty: Yes, quite ardently in fact. E-books, online material on diverse topics, editorials of different newspapers and almost everything can be found online these days and I utilised it profusely.

WBCSMadeEasy: Were you doing any other job during preparation?

Mr. Subhabrata Chakrabarty: No. I was engaged in full time academic research work.

WBCSMadeEasy: Which newspapers & magazines you went through?

Mr. Subhabrata Chakrabarty: The Hindu, The Telegraph, Economic and Political Weekly (selectively) and op-ed section of few others including Livemint, The Indian Express and Business Standard.

WBCSMadeEasy: Did u take coaching? How was the experience?

Mr. Subhabrata Chakrabarty: I did not take any coaching for the preliminary and main stages of WBCS examination, although, I did attend mock interviews (organised by WBCS MadeEasy/Success Team) before the D-day. Regarding mock interviews, I must say that these were quite helpful in highlighting my strengths and areas that needed to be worked on.

WBCSMadeEasy: What about Interview in WBCS? Was the board cordial?

Mr. Subhabrata Chakrabarty: IAs already mentioned, I did attend a few mock interviews before the D-day.
The interview of WBCS examination is one of the most crucial stages. Although, the final merit list is based upon the mains and interview marks taken together, nevertheless, one must give one’s best efforts towards each and every stage of WBCS examination.
For interview, one needs to go through op-eds regularly and thoroughly and try to frame one’s opinions on each and every topic that would be in the news in the intervening one or two months period in between the mains result and the interview date. One should be absolutely aware of the service that one aspires to get into; about one’s place of birth, schooling and living; about one’s job (if employed); one’s optional and graduation subjects. The key is to be able to think and organise thoughts instantaneously and present it in a palatable manner. One should be prepared to be interviewed in both Bengali and English languages. One’s English speaking skills need not be perfect, but it needs to be presentable. I would suggest standing in front of a mirror and articulating one’s opinions to gain confidence in this regard.
My personal experience of WBCS interview is quite excellent. The board was cordial. I was given ample time to form my opinion, organize my thoughts and then present it before the board in appropriate manner. From my personal experience I can say that keeping one’s calm is the key.
The most important thing is one should not try to bluff one’s way through the interview because no matter how efficient the veil is, light always gets through. One should be exactly who one is.

WBCSMadeEasy: Plz suggest some good books for pre, comp, optional.

Mr. Subhabrata Chakrabarty: For preliminary and compulsory subjects of mains (General Studies) — new NCERTS (Class 6-12) (History, Geography, Civics, Science (upto Class 10), Biology (Class 12, UNITS 8-10), Chemistry (Last chapters of both Classes 11 and 12 textbooks) Macroeconomics and Indian Constitution at Work, Indian Economic development, Old NCERT Bipan Chandra (Class 10 textbook), R. S. Aggarwal (for GS-4).
Language Papers — Regular writing practice, solving previous years’ papers, following op-eds in newspapers.
Optional (Pol. Sc.) — Relevant modules of IGNOU PDFs on Political Science and Public Administration (for Pol SC. Paper-I and Paper-II Group A), International Relation by Peu Ghosh (for Paper-II Group B) supplemented by IGNOU PDFs.

WBCSMadeEasy: What should be the strategy for cracking this exam? What message you want to give to all aspirants?

Mr. Subhabrata Chakrabarty: Relentless hard work done very smartly is the key to crack this exam. Quality time should be put behind preparation regularly and keeping oneself updated is a must for an aspirant. One need not go for studying 8-10hrs everyday just because someone else has done so. Number of hours spent studying is irrelevant to the outcome received, it is the quality time spent studying that matters. Most importantly one should believe in the FACT that anyone can crack this examination with right amount of dedication.
One should always remember that no mountain is too tall to climb and no terrain is too treacherous to cross. Perseverance and believing in one’s ability is the key.

WBCSMadeEasy: Anything else u want to share?

Mr. Subhabrata Chakrabarty: Everyone has a unique strategy of one’s own. This is the strategy that worked for me and might be completely irrelevant for the other person. One should devise one’s own strategy of cracking the examination.

WBCSMadeEasy: Was it ur 1st attempt? If not what about previous ones? You are from which batch and what was your rank in WBCS Exam (Plz don’t mind)?

Mr. Subhabrata Chakrabarty: This (WBCS Examination, 2015) was my first attempt. I belong to West Bengal Commercial Tax Service (Service Rank-6), Batch-2015.

WBCSMadeEasy: Do you suggest anything on changed pattern of WBCS Exam like how to choose optional subject, how to study for main exam now , what should be the strategy etc.?

Mr. Subhabrata Chakrabarty: The change in pattern of examination is quite appropriate and it will definitely help in streamlining the entire examination cycle and thereby, reduce the time taken to complete one cycle. I personally feel that there is not much of a difference on how to choose an optional, although, in terms of compulsory papers one needs to focus on both factual as well as analytical portions.

WBCSMadeEasy: Have you ever seen our website? How helpful it is in WBCS exam?

Mr. Subhabrata Chakrabarty: Yes, your website has been really helpful for me in revising the current affairs portion on a weekly basis.
