    Why is Election Conducted?

Before getting to know the reason behind conducting elections, we should first know the meaning of Democracy.

The U.S President Abraham Lincoln defined democracy as, “Government of the people, by the people, and for the people”.

In a democratic system, people choose their representatives or leaders by voting for them in elections. The elected leaders become accountable for the people and they have to regain people’s consent at regular intervals to continue in their roles. This is the reason why elections are conducted at fixed intervals.

As per the Indian Constitution, elections for the Parliament and the State Legislative Assemblies must be conducted every five years; this may change in case if an emergency state is declared.

Political Parties Gearing Up for Lok Sabha Elections 2019-

Similar to human population, the political parties in India are also more in number and are growing every day. These political parties are grouped under three buckets namely –

    1. The National Parties

    2. The State Recognized Parties

    3. The Unrecognized Parties

According to data statistics, there were 7 National parties, 24 State recognized parties and 2044, Unrecognized parties as on Apr 13, 2018. The Indian National Congress Party founded by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru remained to be the single most dominant party in India from 1947 to 1964. Soon other parties started joining the race. For example, in the last general elections held in 2014, the National Democratic Alliance led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rose up for a mighty victory defeating the Congress Party making Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister of India.

There are also numerous regional parties and caste ridden parties in India such as the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Telugu Desam Party, the Indian National Lok Dal, Telangana Rashtra Samithi, Shiromani Akali Dal, Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, Janata Dal, Shiv Sena etc.,

As the Lok Sabha Elections 2019 is nearing, we might see a rise in the number of independent parties and alliances.

    Use of Technology in Elections-

There is no place in this world where we cannot find the trace of technological advancement. Technology has set its foot even in the election process long back but most of us are not aware of it. This got exposed to the world only recently when the CEOs of big social media firms were accused of using social medias to influence elections.

The political parties in India are also using social media to gain advantage.

Statistics reveal that next to China, India has the second highest number of internet users which is close to 462.12 million and this number will correspond to nearly 258.27 million social network users by 2019. Most of the national parties have dedicated Data Analytics Department to analyze public data. The parties are focusing on these data to set up their election campaign and design their election manifestos. Political parties are focusing on using these data tools to turn out more votes in their favour.

Forecast of Lok Sabha Elections 2019-

All the political parties in India are looking forward for the Lok Sabha Elections that is to be held in 2019. All the social mediums are predicting this election to be a real game changer in Indian politics. After the 2014 general elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with Narendra Modi in lead was in full form and the popularity of Modi throughout the nation and even worldwide gave an unshakable confidence to the party members. The party was expanding its territory in numerous states after coming to power. Many social analysts were under the impression that BJP is to emerge as the only dominant party in India and Narendra Modi will remain in power for at least two or three terms.

The recent elections held in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and their results (Dec 2018) has crushed all these notions about BJP. The Indian National Congress Party defeated BJP in all these states thus proving that they are back in the game and hinted that BJP has lost the trust of people. This twist just before few months of commencement of Lok Sabha Elections 2019 has confirmed that the coming election is going to be a historic event in Indian politics.
