Civil services examination process takes a time period extending up to almost a year. Its preparation is not one day or a week or a month’s job, it has to be well planned and the entire syllabus has to be covered first even before you think of taking the preliminary examination. A totally different time schedule is required when you are going to take up the exam. So Civil Services aspirants must know

    • How to utilize the preparation time before the exams
    • How many hours one needs to put in per day to qualify these exams
    • How to schedule the time table of study etc.
    1. Create a realistic not strict timetable

The first step towards IAS preparation is making a timetable. It appears to many candidates that strict timetable works the best but the reality is, it is very difficult to continue with it in the long run. Hence, set a goal and try to manage time in terms of the day, week, and a month, as this will give you the flexibility to manage your time in a way as time passes by and also candidates should be extremely committed to their target and achieve them irrespective of any hurdles that may come their way. Be realistic and design a suitable timetable for yourself.

    1. Make short, practical and accomplishable targets

Many candidates make the mistake of making tough targets for a short time period of time. But the correct approach is to focus on the topics properly and understand them deeply rather than attempting to learn things in limited time. If you make small realistic targets, you will be able to complete them on time and thus complete the syllabus.

    1. Divide and Study

You should follow the strategy of dividing the larger topics into subtopics and complete them so that you can finish fast and keep down the tough topics that consume much time, as it will make it easy to cover the topics within the allotted study time. You should always start with the topics which are easy to understand and then move towards the tougher ones.

    1. Organize study time

It is a known fact that UPSC Syllabus is very vast and one needs to organise time well. It is very difficult to complete the syllabus in a limited time period, but if one follows the right strategy and organises time then one can easily cover the major portion of it. Most of the IAS aspirants fail because of the time crunch and the key reason behind it is the poor organization of study time. So, once you divide your syllabus to conquer it, draft a study time like when you are going to study, how you are going to study and within what time you would finish it. Like suggested earlier, set realistic goals for your study time and ensure that you are ready to face the challenge that you are set for yourself. Make sure that you are ready with all your study materials and resources and don’t look for books when you sit for study as it will eat up your study time.

    1. Know when to give up

You should remember the fact that you should not stick to a topic for a very long time as it causes boredom as well as you are not able to manage studies of other subjects properly. To avoid such instances, it is crucial to know when to give up and choose another topic and look for the pending topics again with the right guidance.

    1. Take A Break!

UPSC preparation requires long hours of study. One should take small breaks whenever one feels that efficiency has reduced. This rejuvenates your mind and makes it ready to grasp more. Study time doesn’t mean that you have to compromise on your health regime, so take a break and maintain a healthy balance in your lifestyle but at the same time make sure that you remember whatever you grasped until your break time. But yes, breaks should not be that long which causes harm to your schedule of studies.

    1. Stick to the Plan

You should make your own study plan which works the best for you. Every IAS aspirant would come across this situation where they may get suggestions, tips and advice from every other person regarding the preparation, but keep in mind don’t get diverted. You know yourself better than others. So it is you who has to decide how you can prepare for this exam in the best way possible.

Though it is imperative to be open to new ideas, at the same time, it is essential to believe in your study plan and stick to it.

It is suggested that if you feel like your study plan is not working then don’t take too long and within four weeks try to change the study plan but make sure that you do some minor changes, as changing the whole study plan at that point will not make any sense.
