The positive outcome of social capital are either tangible or intangible. It generally includes flow of useful information and innovative ideas to promote future opportunities.
Social capital is enhanced by the network of citizenship ties where reciprocity and a sense of belonging act as the prime determinants. A deficit in the social capital is the wellspring of our social and economic problems, as it aggravates communal disharmony, nepotism and lack of social cohesion.
Over the years, India is in the backfoot owing to this massive social capital deficit. This deficit has triggered rampant dynastic succession, be it in politics, business, arts or page 3. Off late, the sad demise of Sushant Singh Rajput has exposed the uglier side of nepotism in Bollywood. India is struggling to win the war against Covid 19 due to lack of reciprocity and a sense of belonging. Government inactions and a biased media have destroyed the intra-society trust and goodwill by trying to legislate equality of outcomes, instead of focusing on the calibration of effective social capital. Mob lynching, inter caste and inter religious conflicts are the headlines nowadays.
India needs to shift its focus towards building a strong social networking which coupled with efficient performance by the citizens would signify a healthy state of affairs for the nation. It’s high time that we should realize and assimilate the value of social relationships and networks that complement the economic capital. This would enable us to reap the actual benefits of demographic dividend.
