Hi Friends , I am Amit Kumar Ray and I secured 10th rank in Revenue Service in WBCS 2017. I am sharing here my interview experience that was held on 30th Aug.
The panel consisted of 4 person including the chairman. I was the first candidate to be interviewed post lunch. The waiting time outside the interview room was the most difficult phase as I was going through ultra high palpitation and drank around a litre of water to compose myself while waiting( Lol). However, the moment I entered into the room , the situation changed drastically and the environment was very soothing. The entire conversation during the interview was in Bengali which I have translated here in English.
I wished the chairman sir and he asked me to take seat. He was very cordial.
Chairman Sir : Amit introduce yourself in Bengala.
Me : Started my introduction and spoke around 90 sec when he asked me to stop.
Chairman Sir : Can you also write and read Bengala ?
Me : Haan sir nischoie parbo .
Sir dictated me 3 lines to write and I did.
Then I was told to read a paragraph from any article from the newspaper kept on table. I read around a paragraph when sir asked me to stop.
Chairman Sir : You have done B-Tech , right ?  From which college ?
Me: Yes sir. From Techno India, Saltlake.
Chairman Sir : Unable to understand why exactly you want to join WBCS after doing B-Tech.
Me : Sir , there are number of reasons why I want to join WBCS. Apart from good salary and career opportunity , it gives me opportunities to work at grass root level. Also I will be able to see the impact of the decisions that I will take.
Chairman Sir: So , currently you are not able to see the impact of the work you are doing ?
Me: ( felt little uncomfortable ) explained that my work is more technical in nature and work like black box.
Follow up questions were asked like my current in hand salary , Organization,  whether I have been abroad etc. I replied those.
Chairman Sir : ( Again back to same question ) Why exactly b- tech was required ? You could have pursued any other course.
Me: Sir, I learned lot of things.( Was trying to explain that my work experience was not waste but interrupted )
    Member 1 : like ?
Me : Like I learned the value of team work , and how to work with my seniors and juniors.
M1 : B- Tech was not required for this. What next?
Me : I learned how to meet the deadline and complete my given work.
M1: B- Tech was not required for this . What next?
Me: This time more convincingly I said that that my learning has not been wasted at all. It has helped me to be evolved into more mature person and I could do much better in civil service using my learning. After this there was a pause from the panel for 5 seconds and there was no follow up question. ( Felt little relieved 😛 ) Now the second member of panel took over.
M2: I was asked few factual questions about my home district like Literacy Rate , Sex ratio , Ward no from where I belonged , Name of my Councillor etc.
Me : Answered all of those and then member 1 again took over.
M1 : Tell us the text of Preamble of the Constitution . And some related question like Can it be amended , Is it part of Constitution , In which amendment it was amended , What was the new words inserted in Preamble.
    Me: Answered all those correctly.
M1: What was name of Judgment after which Preamble became part of the Constitution.
Me: Was not fully sure . Said that Possibly It was Keshavnanada Bharti Case. Was again asked which year and I replied 1976.
M2: What is square of 99.
Me: This was unexpected , and that too when we were talking about Preamble in previous question ( Lol ). Took a pause for 5 -10 second , when I was helped me M3 .
M3: Ok tell us what approach will you take.
Me: With full stupidity , I told him that I will use the formula (a^2 – b^2) .
All the panel laughed and someone said “eta to notun sikhlam” . Quickly I realized my mistake and without being much embarrassed apologized and corrected myself. Said that I will use the formula (a-b)^2 ..(100-1)^2 . Again made a calculation mistake while calculating this and M3 sir came to my rescue and corrected it.
Now Again M1 sir took over.
M1: So you are interested in Police Service . Have you seen any police operations in real time ?
Me: No sir , have not seen any live operations. but have seen that in Television.
M1: Television ??? And all the panel burst into laughter. (For a moment I thought that I made blunder by saying this). Ok. You must have seen in Films that a criminal in there in a Prison and Police is using force on him. What is the term called ?
Me: Kept quiet as was unable to recall. Sir gave me hint about Degree. I recalled and replied that its Third Degree.
M1: What is your opinion on Third Degree. What will you do if you have to do it.
Me: Again , a Pause( was confused which stand to take ). Sir, I think that its illegal and even Supreme Court in a Judgement has said that use of force in prison is illegal.
M1: Lets forget about Supreme Court. What will you do ?
Me: Sir, We cannot make Judicial torture as normal. This can be misused and can be used against an innocent also to get any desired statement.
M1: You will be going there as officer to see that its not misused.
Me: Didn’t know what to say next and no other point was coming to my mind. Very politely but Firmly ( and smiling ) said that “Sir, force use kora ta thik hobe na “
Chairman sir came to my rescue , and said in humorous manner that ” baad dao , o third degree use korte chaiche na , tai 3rd choice e police service rakheche ” ( I was asked about my service choice earlier)
M4: Have you visited any block office. ?
    Me: No Sir
M4: Visited any state government Office ?
Me: Said No. But someone reminded about Police Station and I said yes.
M4: Asked where I have visited in West Bengal , Administrative division of West Bengal , Districts of WB , Hierarchy of BDO etc.
    Me: Answered all those.
Chairman Sir: Tell me about some important ministry. He asked around 10 ministry name from WB and I replied all of those.
M2: Where is the International Court Of Justice located.
    Me: Hague (Netherland).
M1: What are the Qualities of a Police Officer ?
Me: He should be Honest and with Integrity. He should be Dedicated to his work that he is assigned ( was interrupted at this )
M1: Do you have all this quality ?
Me: With firm conviction . “Haan Sir , nischoi ache “.
Chairman Sir: What is Article 17. ?
Me: Replied – abolition of Untouchability.
    Chairman Sir: Article 61.
Me: Didn’t Know that. and said that I don’t know.
Chairman Sir: Amit , your interview is over. You may leave now.
Me: Thank you Sir. ( and left the room ).
[ The purpose of the above narration is to let my friends, who would face interview  for first time , get a feel of the interview environment. I have put every details here.Hope it will help the aspirants. Best of Luck ]
