    WBCSMadeEasy:When and how did the inspiration and idea of joining civil service come in your mind?

    ABHISHEK BASU:I was pursuing my doctoral study, but I wanted to do something different. I wanted to join one of the most prestigious civil services. Around April 2014, I decided to prepare seriously for WBCS

    WBCSMadeEasy:Tell us something about yourself?

    ABHISHEK BASU:I was a student of Kendriya Vidyalaya Fort William. I did my graduation from Presidency college Kolkata and my master degree from Rajabazar Science college. Throughout my career I got high first class. I did my PhD. in Biochemistry (Calcutta University) from CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Biology under CSIR Fellowship.

    WBCSMadeEasy:What factors did you consider before selecting your optionals? What were they?

    ABHISHEK BASU:My Graduation subject Zoology was my optional because I am accustomed to write Honours level answers in this subject.

    WBCSMadeEasy:How did you sustain the study-momentum throughout the year?

    ABHISHEK BASU:I studied for 6-7 months. After spending many years in research, studying something different was relaxing.

    WBCSMadeEasy:How many hours did you study per day? How many months did it take you to complete the core syllabus of Compulsory and optional subjects?

    ABHISHEK BASU:6 hours a day for 6-7 months.

    WBCSMadeEasy:Did u use internet, was it effective?

    ABHISHEK BASU:I used internet only when it was absolutely needed.

    WBCSMadeEasy:Were you doing any other job during preparation?

    ABHISHEK BASU:I was actively involved in research.

    WBCSMadeEasy:Which newspapers & magazines you went through?

    ABHISHEK BASU:The Hindu, The Telegraph, The Anandabazar Patrika, Wizard, Achievers etc. (according to the availability. Not all at a time)

    WBCSMadeEasy:Did u take coaching? How was the experience?

    ABHISHEK BASU: I took coaching only for the interview. Institutes like Success/WBCSMadeEasy” are really helpful.

    WBCSMadeEasy:What about Interview in WBCS? Was the board cordial? What should be a proper preparation?

    ABHISHEK BASU:The Interview Board was cordial. One should not expect anything specific during the interview. Rather one should face the board with an open mind.

    WBCSMadeEasy:Plz suggest some good books for pre, comp, optional.

    ABHISHEK BASU:History-Jiban Mukhopadhyay (old book), Geography-Kartick Chandra Mondal (Latest Bengali version), Indian Polity-Laxmikanth, Indian economy- Ramesh Singh

    WBCSMadeEasy:What should be the strategy for cracking this exam?What message you want to give to all aspirants?

    ABHISHEK BASU:With changing Pattern of questions one should contact an expert in WBCS as well as in specific subjects to select the books and devise a strategy for preparation. Answer maximum questions. Don’t get bothered about the negative marking.

    WBCSMadeEasy:Was it ur 1st attempt? If not what about previous ones? You are from which batch and what was your rank in WBCS Exam ?

    ABHISHEK BASU:This was my first attempt and I Got 4th rank in the Executive category.

    WBCSMadeEasy:What about the changing pattern of WBCS exam from 2014?like how
    to choose optional subject, how to study for main exam now , what should be the strategy etc.?

    ABHISHEK BASU:Please select your graduation subject as your optional. Study in a combined manner for both prelims and mains. Don’t wait till the prelims result for mains preparation.
