WBCSMadeEasy:When and how did the inspiration and idea of joining civil service come in your mind?

Devleena Sardar:My father is a govt officer so my first inspiration comes from him. I always wanted to be independent and join a respected service. I think Civil service is the best option for that.

WBCSMadeEasy:Tell us something about yourself?

Devleena Sardar:My family consists of my father & me. My mother died 20 years ago. Thats why I did my schooling from RK Mission sarada Mandir sarisha as a residential student. After madhyamik I came back to my home & passed HS from Laban Hrad Vidyapith for girls in humanities. I graduated from Presidency college with Sociology(hons) and completed my Masters from Calcutta University.

Madhyamik 65%
HS (humanities) 69%
BA (hons) 59%
MA 61%

WBCSMadeEasy:What factors did you consider before selecting your optionals? What were
they?

Devleena Sardar:My first optional was sociology as it was my hons subject. My second optional was Pali which is a bit uncommon. When I went through the syllabus I found Pali syllabus was very short in size. Its also easy for bengali medium students because it has some similarity with sanskirt & bengali grammar. I already heard that Pali is a scoring subject. In competitive examinations marks say the ultimate words.

WBCSMadeEasy:How did you sustain the study-momentum throughout the year?

Devleena Sardar:I was never a serious student in my life. But while preparing this exam I understood that regularity is very important. So I made it a point that whatever happens in the day I will at least read 1 hr a day. I suggest everyone the same. If u dnt get time read at least 30min a day. In 24 hr its not difficult for a student to give 30min at least. regularity is very important in this preparation.

WBCSMadeEasy:How many hours did you study per day? How many months did it take you to complete the core syllabus of Compulsory and optional subjects?

Devleena Sardar:I started my preparation from december 2012. I focused mainly on prili till 7th april. After preliminary examination I started preparing for mains. I think prili is the most difficult level because most students are eliminated from this round. I was very ignorant towards sociology because I
had to focus on other papers. I know that GK & constitution were my strong areas so I worked hard on them. I am weak in math so I targeted at least 60% in maths. For Pali I went to a tutor because it cannot be studied alone.

WBCSMadeEasy:Did u use internet, was it effective?

Devleena Sardar:Yes I have internet access. It is effective. But I prefer reading hard copies. So I tried to read books on every subject. But internet is very useful for GK & current affairs.

WBCSMadeEasy:Were you doing any other job during preparation?

Devleena Sardar:No. I my full focus was on this examination.

WBCSMadeEasy:Which newspapers & magazines you went through?

Devleena Sardar:In Bengali I read Pratiyogita Pariprakhit. In English I read Pratiyogita Darpan for essays mainly, special issues of chronicles and yogna.

WBCSMadeEasy:Did u take coaching? How was the experience?

Devleena Sardar:I got admitted to an institution after preliminary. Experience was good & proved helpful for planning paper & maths.

WBCSMadeEasy:What about Interview in WBCS? Was the board cordial? What should be a proper preparation?

Devleena Sardar:My interview was good. Board members were very cordial & helpful. They created a friendly environment for me. It was a good discussion session for me.

WBCSMadeEasy:Plz suggest some good books for pre, comp, optional.

Devleena Sardar:For preliminary & mains
Madhyamik History Jibon Mukhopadhay ( before 2004 ed)
Geography class 6-10( WB Board & NCERT)
English (RS Agarwal)
Maths (KC Nag)
GI(RS Agarwal)
Economics ( Ramesh Singh)
Constitution ( Lakshmikant)

For Sociology
CN Shankar Rao ( Part 1 & 2)
Social Problems In modern India by Ram Ahuja
Social systems in India By Ram Ahuja
Indian Society By Sc Dube
IGNOU materials are very helpful for non sociology background students

WBCSMadeEasy:What should be the strategy for cracking this exam? What message you want to give to all aspirants?

Devleena Sardar:Preliminary is the most difficult part of civil service because most 90% students were eliminated from prili. Dnt answer if you are not 100% sure. Guess work is highly dangerous here. Always remember about negative marking. If you prepare for prili properly mains will not become a problem. Always remember failure is the pillar of success. Never give up hope. Hard work & dedication can overcome all oddities of life.

WBCSMadeEasy:Was it ur 1st attempt? If not what about previous ones? You are from which
batch and what was your rank in WBCS Exam ?

Devleena Sardar:It was my first attempt. I have not qualified in 2014 so cannot advice anything about the new pattern.

WBCSMadeEasy:Have you ever seen our website? How helpful it is in WBCS exam?

Devleena Sardar:Yes I have seen your web site. Its really helpful. But publicity is required. More students need to know about your site. It will really help those students who have limited internet access.

We thank Ms Devleen Sardar for sparing her precious time to help for aspirants by giving this interview.
