1.Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has declared the list of members and chairpersons for 24 DRSCs (Department Related Standing Committees) of Parliament. While the ruling BJP grabbed 11 chairperson posts of these panels, the Congress will chair 5, including the coveted Committee on Finance.

The Trinamool Congress will chair two panels. Members of Bahujan Samaj Party, Telugu Desam Party, Biju Janata Dal, Janata Dal (United), Shiv Sena and the AIADMK will chair one panel each.

2.Oldest surviving Test cricketer, South African fast bowler Norman Gordon (103), passed away after a year long illness due to renal complications. Gordon played 5 Tests against England in 1939 taking 20 wickets in all before World War cut short his international career.
He was best known for being one of the 22 players, who took part in the epic ‘Timeless Test’ between England and South Africa that was held between March 3-14, 1939 in Durban.

3.Japan has decided to remove 6 Indian Space and Defence linked bodies from its end-user list. PM Modi welcomed the announcement by Japanese Government to remove 6 of India’s space and defence related entities from its Foreign End User List held that both the countries look forward to improved trade and partnership in high technology.
The 6 companies removed from Japan’s end user list can now enter into transactions concerning sensitive dual use equipment, technology and software.

4.Approximately 800 years after the ancient education institution was ruined, on September 1, 2014, Nalanda University (also known as University of Nalanda), in Bihar’s Rajgir district, commenced its first academic session. Nalanda is a Central University in Rajgir, about 55 miles south east of Patna, near Nalanda, Bihar, India. The university is envisioned to re-establish the older Nalanda University which was one of the oldest ancient higher-learning institutions. Nobel Laureate Dr. Amartya Sen is the Chancellor of the University.

5.In its presentation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Department of Telecommunications(DoT), Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, has set a cutoff date: July 31, 2015, for closing the much debated merger of stressed state-run telecom companies, BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd) and MTNL (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd).
MTNL runs telecom services in Delhi and Mumbai while BSNL offers telecom coverage in the rest of India.Mahanagar Telephone Mauritius Limited (MTML) in Mauritius is a wholly owned subsidiary of MTNL. It proves mobile and international long distance services.

6.Challenging economic environment for most of the last year has pushed India down to 71st position in an yearly Global Competitiveness List 2014-15, released by the Geneva-based World Economic Forum (WEF). India has the lowest position amongst the 5 BRICS Nations. Switzerland is the most competitive economy.
The yearly list, has come at a time when the fresh Modi Government has just completed 100 days in power. Thus it faces faces the test of bettering competitiveness and revitalizing the economy, which is at present growing at half the rate of 2010.

The decline in position of India by 11 places to 71st, set against the gains of the ASEAN 5 nations, indicates that the competitiveness divide South and Southeast Asia is becoming more noticeable. India’s downslide in the competitiveness rankings started in 2009, when its economy was still rising at 8.5% (it even grew by 10.3% in 2010).

7.Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his maiden bilateral visit outside the Indian subcontinent to Japan, inked the cultural agreement of Varanasi-Kyoto which spotlights on how to preserve heritage while building Smart Cities.
PM Modi visited Kyoto the ‘smart city’ of Japan, to understand the experiment there bearing in mind that he intends to build 100 smart cities in India. Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan, had been included in Modi’s schedule as it “dovetails into Modi’s emphasis on rejuvenation of cities while preserving their cultural heritage.”

8.On August 30, 2014, email turned 32 years. The method of message transfer was invented by Indian American V.A.Shiva Ayyadurai when he was just 14 years. V A Shiva Ayyadurai was born to a Tamil Family in Bombay in 1963.

9.PM Narendra Modi’s next giant drive to free up service delivery from the hold of the lower bureaucracy will be in the form of a ‘digital cloud’ for every Indian.
Now, Certificates issued by the Govt.: Education, residential, medical records, birth certificates, etc. will be saved in separate ‘digital lockers’ and a communication protocol will be established for Govt Departments to access them without actually having to see the hard copy.

10.Baba Kalyani has been re-nominated as the Co-Chairman of the India-Japan Business Leader’s Forum (IJBLF). The Ministry of Commerce and Industry appointed Kalyani as chairman of IJBLF. Kalyani is Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Forge Ltd.

11.Pakistan Government has appointed its Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif as mediator to neutralize the ongoing political crisis in the country. The decision to seek COAS’ help was taken after both Imran Khan, chief of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and Tahir-ul-Qadri, the chief of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) refused to end their protests demanding Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to resign.
Background:
The current political turbulence in Pakistan was caused after the former additional secretary Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Afzal Khan claimed that the general election in which Nawaz Sharif registered an overwhelming victory was rigged. The country is in turmoil owing to political impasse for two weeks. Anti-government protests have gripped the capital Islamabad.
Earlier, Pakistan’s military had chosen not to intervene in the political crisis. But now, with the direct involvement of the General, there are apprehensions that military could use this opportunity to exercise its influence over a democratically-elected civilian government.

12.Oscar organizers declared that they will give a esteemed humanitarian award to US actor-producer-singer Harry Belafonte, whose efforts as an activist has assisted throw light on racism and discrimination. It will be presented at the body’s 6th annual Governors Awards on November 8, 2014 in Hollywood. He wasdnicknamed the “King of Calypso” for popularizing the Caribbean musical style in the 1950s.

13.J&K Legislative Council passed a resolution urging the government to resume the talks with Pakistan. Chairman of the Council Amrit Malhotra moved the resolution on behalf of the house. The resolution also suggested state government to take steps for the relief and rehabilitation.The resolution may stir controversy as the constitution of Jammu and Kashmir clearly says that Foreign Affairs are not under the purview of the state government.

14.August 29 was celebrated as National Sports Day across the country. The day marks the birth anniversary of Hockey Wizard, Major Dhyan Chand.

15.The Supreme Court has advised the Prime Minister or Chief Minister of a State not to appoint chargesheeted persons facing trial for offences involving moral turpitude as Ministers. Although there was no such condition mentioned in the Constitution of India which debars any Member of Parliament or Legislative Assembly being included in the Cabinet, the court said the Prime Minister as the trustee of the Constitution was expected to act in consonance with constitutional propriety and not appoint unwarranted persons as Ministers.
Justice Dipak Misra is his judgment observed “Article 75 of the Constitution does not contain any limitation as to who can or cannot be included in the Council of Ministers” and therefore no new disqualification could be added to prevent charge sheeted persons from being appointed as Ministers.
The five-member Bench headed by Chief Justice of India R.M. Lodha observed that criminalization of politics destroyed people’s faith in democracy and persons, howsoever, high he/she might be could not be exempted from equal treatment. It held that constitutional morality, good governance and constitutional trust expected good sense from the PM and it should be left to his wisdom not to recommend any person with criminal charges from being inducted as a Minister.
The court also said that many things could not be said in the Constitution, but the Constitution could not however be expected to operate in a vacuum. The PM should act in the interest of national polity and avoid unwarranted persons facing criminal charges to reinstate people’s faith in democracy.
The Court declined to add a new disqualification in the Constitution for appointment as Ministers, saying it was the prerogative of the PM or the CM of a State to induct Ministers of his/her choice.

16.TurkeyTurkey’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has been named the new Prime Minister of the country. He will succeed Recep Tayyip Erdogan as PM. A close ally of Mr Erdogan, Mr Davutoglu has held the job of foreign minister since 2009. On August 10, 2014, Mr Erdogan won the country’s first direct presidential poll.

17.In a proposal to augment its sustainability offerings, the Union Ministry of Tourism launched the comprehensive Sustainable Tourism Criteria for India (STCI) for accommodation, tour operators and beaches, backwaters, lakes and rivers sectors.
STCI has been launched to develop tourism in India based on principles of sustainability and minimizing carbon footprints. While talking about sustainability, one should not only talk about conservation of resources but also our culture and heritage. All the stakeholders in the Tourism industry have been requested to be eco-sensitive and implement the STCI and have been requested to do business for long-term profits with diverse aims.
STCI were formulated by a committee constituted by the Ministry of Tourism.

19.Union Government launched a new domain Dot Bharat (.भारत) in Devanagari script . Originally the domain will cover 8 languages like Hindi, Bodo, Dogri, Konkani, Maithili, Marathi, Nepali and Sindhi.
These 8 languages are from the list of 22 languages that has been contained in the Schedule-8 of the Constitution of India.
Objective of “ .भारत ” domain:
To connect individuals with social media and deliver content in regional languages, particularly to those who are not acquainted with English.
To deliver information to persons in their own regional languages which will help in advancement of e-governance.
The domain was developed by the joint efforts of National Internet Exchange of India and CDAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing). Dot Bharat (.भारत) would substitute the normally used top domains like .com, .in, .net, etc.

20.Seema Malhotra (42), an Indian-origin British MP, has been appointed as the Labour party’s maiden shadow minister dealing with violence against women and girls. Malhotra was nominated shadow minster by Britain’s Opposition party leader Ed Miliband. Malhotra’s responsibility will also involve working on Labour’s Women’s Safety Commission, which will formulate laws to be enacted if Miliband is victorious in the next polls.
Note: A shadow minister is a member of the main opposition party in Parliament who would hold ministerial office if their party were in power.

21.Yashwardhan Shukla, a 13-year old school boy based in Delhi, has penned a novel titled ‘Gods of Antarctica’. The book is a fictional tale of gods and monsters. The book was published by the Readers Paradise.
