5.3-Magnitude Earthquake Impacts Telangana’s Mulugu
• An earthquake of magnitude 5.3, originating 40km below the ground in the Eturnagaram forest area of Telangana, India, was felt in central and northern India.
• The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) identified the location as 185 km northeast of Nalgonda and 219 km east-northeast of Hyderabad.
• The earthquake occurred at the deeper layers of the Godavari fault system, causing lesser shaking than expected due to maximum seismic energy dissipation at deeper depths.
• The quake received 100 felt-responses, most originating in Telangana.
• The’moderate’ earthquake at Medaram in Mulugu district is the second biggest recorded in the last 55 years in the region.
