India’s Tuberculosis Burden in 2023
• India had the highest global TB burden in 2023, with 26% of all cases and deaths.
• Over half of global TB cases were concentrated in five countries: Indonesia (10%), China (6.8%), the Philippines (6.8%), and Pakistan (6.3%).
• Despite a steady decrease in TB deaths, 26% of global TB deaths among people with and without HIV occurred in India.
• TB incidence relative to the population dropped from 275.7 cases in 2010 to 194.9 cases in 2023.
• TB relapse cases reached the highest level since 2010, mainly affecting men.
• Preventive treatment for TB is increasing, with those with nutritional deficiencies, diabetes, and smoking habits at the highest risk.
• Domestic funding for TB prevention and treatment increased by 38% in 2023 to $253 million, while international funding shrunk.
• India is one of three countries with a national TB prevalence survey completed since 2019.
