    Indian Food Prices Rise due to Poor Crops

    • The Union government reports high prices of onion, tomato, and potato crops in India due to excess rainfall.

    • The price variation of these staples under the previous United Progressive Alliance government was higher than the first 10 years of the Narendra Modi government.

    • The all-India average price of tomato was ₹52.35 a a kilogram on Thursday, compared to ₹39.2 on November 14, 2023.

    • Onion prices decreased by 1.68% from last year, while potatoes increased by 50.52%.

    • The government’s timely intervention, such as selling tomatoes at fixed prices and releasing onion buffers, has stabilized prices.
