AI Governance in India: A Union Government Panel’s Recommendations

• The Union government panel, responsible for developing AI guidelines, has recommended the establishment of an inter-ministerial committee to enforce AI rules and ensure effective governance of India’s AI ecosystem.

• The report, released by the IndiaAI Mission, is the most detailed articulation of the government’s approach towards AI in India.

• The panel also suggested the IT Ministry should house a “technical secretariat” to pool multi-disciplinary expertise and assess risks.

• The report outlines principles for AI governance including transparency, accountability, safety, privacy, fairness, human-centered values, inclusive and sustainable innovation, and “digital by design” governance.
