EC to eliminate state-wide voter IDs
• The Election Commission (EC) has addressed reports of voter ID numbers matching those in other states.
• Regardless of the EPIC number, voters can only vote at the designated polling station in the constituency where they were enrolled.
• The EC plans to remove duplication and ensure each voter gets a unique number.
• The 10-digit number is printed on the ID card issued to each elector.
• West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that the BJP was adding voters from other states to the West Bengal voter list.
• The EC stated that some electors from different States and Union Territories were allotted identical numbers/series by a manual mechanism before shifting the electoral roll database to the ERONET platform.
