    • Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirms an ongoing program to revoke visas of foreign students who are “taking activities that are counter to our national interest, to our foreign policy.”

    • Reports suggest several hundred visas have been revoked, including those held by Indian students.

    • The US government is using surveillance of social media activity as a basis for these revocations.

    • Rubio also references the troubling aspects of the Gaza war protests, citing Jewish students being harassed or university buildings being occupied.

    • Concerns raised about the U.S. government’s stance on the free speech rights of foreign nationals who reside in the country legally.

    • The right to free speech is enshrined in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which has been interpreted broadly.

    • Despite historical and ongoing imperfections, the U.S. has been a beacon of liberal values and due process.

    • The U.S. system of checks and balances should be asserted to rein in the overreach by the Trump administration and preserve the freedoms that define American democracy and inspire large parts of the world.
