    • India may withdraw from talks on a new dispute resolution mechanism, alter hydro-power projects to store more water, and deploy “draw down flushing” of reservoirs.

    • Post-Pahalgam attack, India announced it would hold the treaty in abeyance, implying a stop in periodic communication with Pakistan on hydrological data sharing and infrastructure work.

    • The Permanent Indus Commission, teams of experts from India and Pakistan to resolve disputes, has not convened since 2022.

    • The treaty prohibits India from creating significant hydro-power storage on western rivers and maintaining water levels to prevent flooding or agricultural disruption in Pakistan.

    • Significant changes require “techno-economic” feasibility, with significant investment required due to the location of several projects and terrain.
