The Supreme Court transfers the matter involving Lokpal’s order to another bench.
• A suo motu case regarding the jurisdiction of the anti-corruption ombudsman Lokpal to act on complaints against serving High Court judges has been shifted to another Bench.
• The case stemmed from a Lokpal order of January 27 assuming jurisdiction over High Court judges.
• Justice B.R. Gavai, along with Justices Surya Kant and A.S. Oka, indicated that the case would now be referred back to the Chief Justice of India for the formation of a fresh Bench.
• Justice Gavai, along with Justices Surya Kant and A.S. Oka, will serve as the 52nd Chief Justice of India when the suo motu case comes up again for hearing in July.
• The case was based on a complaint that an Additional High Court judge had influenced an Additional District Judge, and later another High Court judge, to decide in favour of a private company.
• The Lokpal concluded that High Court judges were “public servants” and came within the ambit of the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act of 2013.
