Senior US-China officials meet in Geneva to ‘de-escalate’ trade war.
• US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer met with Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng in Geneva to deescalate a trade war sparked by President Donald Trump’s tariff roll-out and Beijing’s retaliation.
• The talks began mid-morning and were due to continue on Sunday at the Swiss Ambassador to the United Nations’ residence in Geneva.
• Trump’s tariffs on China currently total 145%, with cumulative U.S. duties on some Chinese goods reaching 245%.
• China imposed 125% levies on U.S. goods, cementing a near trade embargo.
• Trump suggested lowering the high tariffs on Chinese imports, but the U.S. would not lower tariffs unilaterally, and China would need to make concessions.
