CJI-led Bench will hear Waqf legislation arguments all day May 20
• Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih will dedicate a day on May 20 to hear arguments on an interim order to stay the provisions of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.
• The case has been pending for the first time since Gavai assumed office as top judge.
• The hearing was originally scheduled to hear arguments on an interim order to stay the implementation of the 2025 amendments to the Waqf law.
• The government had previously nudged the government to not change the character or status of Waqf properties across the country on the basis of these amendments.
• The Supreme Court converted the case into a suo motu one to avoid duplicate petitions and repetitive arguments.
