Pakistan wrote to India to reopen Indus Waters Treaty talks, according to sources.
• Pakistan is open to restart talks with India regarding the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), which India has kept in abeyance since the Pahalgam terror attacks.
• A letter from Syed Ali Murtaza, Secretary of Pakistan Ministry of Water Resources, was received requesting India to nominate representatives for talks with Pakistan’s Indus Commissioner.
• The letter was received a week ago and has not been independently confirmed.
• India has written four times to Pakistan since January 2023 to initiate talks on revising the treaty, but has not received a satisfactory response.
• The letter has been received by Pakistan, objecting to India’s action of keeping the IWT in abeyance, but also indicates Pakistan’s willingness to meet and begin the process for logistics.
• India has declared its intent to “not give a drop of water” to Pakistan under the terms of the IWT.
