Navy recreates 5th-century Ajanta paintings-inspired stitched ship
• The Indian Navy officially inducted and named the INSV Kaundinya, an “ancient stitched sail ship” resembling a fifth-century ship.
• The project was initiated through a tripartite agreement in July 2023, funded by the Culture Ministry.
• The ship was constructed using traditional stitching methods by skilled artisans from Kerala, led by master shipwright Babu Sankaran.
• Launched in February 2025, the ship is now preparing for a transoceanic voyage from Gujarat to Oman.
• The Navy played a central role in the project, overseeing design, technical validation, and construction.
• The ship features square sails and steering oars, which are unique to modern ships.
