  • Why no FIR has been filed against Justice Verma: parliamentary panel

    • MPs from both Opposition and ruling parties demand a reason for the lapse in filing a FIR against Justice Yashwant Varma.

    • The panel members, including Opposition and ruling party MPs, have called for a review petition to revisit the 1991 K. Veeraswami judgement of the Supreme Court.

    • The panel members have questioned why the next steps of filing an FIR and initiating investigations have not been taken.

    • The panel members also urged the government to bring in comprehensive legislation on service rules governing the judiciary, with a provision for suspension.

    • They also called for legislative backing for a code of conduct for the judiciary.

    • The panel also emphasized strict rules governing judges taking post-retirement jobs.

    • The panel is also of the opinion that the Supreme Court Registrar should be consulted on the issue.

    • The Justice Secretary was asked to prepare a comprehensive report on the issues raised and present it at the next panel meeting.
