India’s Girmitiya Community Database Development

• India is working on a comprehensive database of the Girmitiya community, documenting their migration and settlement locations.

• The Prime Minister congratulated Trinidad and Tobago on adopting India’s UPI system for financial transfer between the two countries.

• Sixth-generation Indian-origin citizens of Trinidad and Tobago will receive the Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) card, marking the 180th anniversary of the Girmitiyas’ arrival in 2025.

• The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of belonging and success over struggle in defining the children of Girmitiyas.
