    Kolkata’s Gang Rape Allegations and Women’s Safety Concerns

    • Kolkata is facing allegations of gang rape within South Calcutta Law College.

    • The assault occurred within the college’s protected walls.

    • The city has been protesting over unsafe conditions for women in public places.

    • The National Crime Records Bureau report for 2022 showed the number of crimes against women in Kolkata was the lowest in the country.

    • Monojit Mishra, a 31-year-old former student, is the prime accused.

    • Kolkata police charged Mishra and two others, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, with gang rape and wrongful detention.

    • At least 11 cases have been filed against Mishra.

    • The Communist Party of India (Marxist) State Secretary Mohammed Salim criticizes the TMC for not allowing union elections.

    • Opposition parties, particularly BJP, are rallying against the Mamata Banerjee government.

    • Three senior TMC leaders made comments embarrassing the party within days of the sexual assault.

    • Debatri Mukherjee and Vaagmita Trivedi, students at South Calcutta Law College, express concern about the lack of security and safety in the college.
