Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Sets Process to Remove Allahabad High Court Judge

• Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has initiated the process of removing Justice Yashwant Varma from Allahabad High Court.

• Birla has admitted a motion signed by 146 members and formed a three-member inquiry committee to investigate charges against Varma.

• The committee includes Supreme Court judge Justice Aravind Kumar, Madras High Court Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, and senior Karnataka High Court advocate B.V. Acharya.

• Justice Varma was repatriated from Delhi High Court to Allahabad High Court after burnt currency notes were found at his residence on March 14.

• The removal proposal will remain pending until the committee’s report is received.

• Birla emphasized the importance of unimpeachable character and financial and intellectual integrity in the judiciary.

• The case points towards corruption and is eligible for action under Articles 124, Article 217, and Article 218 of the Constitution of India.
