Pakistan’s First Visit to Bangladesh

• Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar visited Bangladesh for the first time in 13 years.

• The visit was the first in 13 years, marking the first meeting between Pakistan and Bangladesh’s interim government.

• Tensions have been high since 2009, with tensions over the prosecution of Pakistani colleagues during the 1971 liberation war and the assassination of Sheikh Hasina’s father.

• In 2015, Bangladesh demanded the expulsion of a Pakistani diplomat over links to a terror group.

• Despite restoration of envoys, ties have been strained since Ms. Hasina’s ouster last August.

• China has also facilitated the repair process.

• Agreements were reached to restore visa facilitation, have direct flights, grant scholarships for Bangladeshi students, and enhance trade.

• However, the Yunus government has refused to move on Bangladeshi demands for reparations from Pakistan.

• India is concerned about the thaw in Islamabad-Dhaka ties, with reports of Pakistani diplomats supporting Jamaat-e-Islaami student activists.

• New Delhi needs to broaden its political engagement with Bangladeshi political parties, especially with the announcement of elections in February.
