Mini-Cloudbursts in India Rising

• Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director-General of India Meteorological Department (IMD), reports an increase in “mini-cloudbursts” – 5 cm of rain per hour.

• No “increasing trend” in cloudbursts over India in recent years, but “mini-cloudbursts” are rising.

• Rainfall in September, the last official monsoon month, is expected to be “above normal”, 9% more than the usual average of 16.7 cm.

• The rest of India, except northeastern States and parts of “extreme” southern India, is expected to receive above normal rainfall.

• Northeast India, including Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu, Kashmir, Rajasthan, and Delhi, received 26% more rainfall than usual.

• Central India and the southern peninsula saw 8.6% and 9.3% more rainfall than usual.

• August rainfall in northern India was the highest since 2001, with 25 cm rainfall over the southern peninsula.

• The extremely active monsoon in northern India resulted in large-scale destruction of lives and property.
