    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to China, Russia, and India on September 1st marked a shift in India’s foreign policy.

    • The meeting was a result of high-level summits seen as a projection of power by China.

    • The summit included high-level discussions with leaders from various countries, including Turkey, Nepal, Maldives, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

    • The leaders’ statements included counter-West elements, promoting a “Global Governance Initiative” and a “civilisational dialogue” between SCO countries.

    • The meeting also saw a resolution to trade issues between the two countries.

    • The photo of the Tianjin “troika” and subsequent images of the leaders of Russia, China, North Korea, Central Asian states, Iran, Pakistan and others were seen as a challenge to the Western order.

    • On social media, President Trump posted a photo from the SCO summit, claiming the U.S. had “lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest, China.”

    • The White House Trade Adviser Peter Navarro, seen as one of the officials driving tariffs against India, criticized the Modi government for getting closer to Russia and China.

    • India will also participate in a BRICS online summit chaired by Brazil on September 8 to discuss a common response to the U.S. tariffs.

    • Despite the tension, President Trump said that India and the U.S. have a “special relationship” and would “always be great friends with PM Modi”.

    • The visit to China was seen as an attempt to normalize ties after years of serious tensions.

    • The future of India-U.S. relations will depend on whether the U.S. and India can find a compromise over demands to cancel Russian oil imports or for India to open its agricultural and dairy sectors, and whether the U.S. reconsiders its 50% tariff on India.

Foreign policy changes India is important topic for Civil service exam (WBCS).
