Sri Lankan Tamil Refugees Eligible for Long-Term Visas

• Sri Lankan Tamil refugees exempted from penal provisions by Union Home Ministry order are not eligible for long-term visas (LTVs).

• The order removes the “illegal migrant” tag from registered Sri Lankan Tamil nationals who entered India before January 9, 2015.

• LTVs, a precursor to citizenship, are issued for one to five years.

• Sri Lankan Tamils are not eligible for LTVs, but foreigners can apply for Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Act, 1955.

• The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) informed the Rajya Sabha that foreigners, including Sri Lankan citizens, can acquire Indian citizenship by registration or naturalisation after fulfilling eligibility criteria.
