Indian Academics’ Role in Gaza’s Genocide

• Suvrat Raju, a theoretical physicist with the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences Bengaluru, urges Indian academics to pressure the Israeli government to change its policy.

• A group of 500 scientists and academics petitioned the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) to request Israel’s participation.

• The petition aimed to disapprove of Israeli policies and reduce the IOAA’s propaganda value for the Israeli government.

• The IOAA board approved the proposal with an overwhelming majority, effective from next year if Israel chooses to participate.

• The Israeli embassy reacted furiously, suggesting that the Olympiad should change Albert Einstein’s relativity theory to “Hamas’ political theories”.

• 300 Indian academics, including directors of two IITs and vice chancellors of several universities, asked the Prime Minister’s Office to take “strict and appropriate action” against seven signatories, including the two of us, and the President of IOAA.

• The decision was taken by the IOAA’s board, not by the signatories, none of whom are members of the board.

• The UN has officially declared a famine in Gaza, calling it a “man-made disaster”.

• Israel’s supporters sometimes argue that its continued campaign is necessary to ensure its security in the aftermath of the attack of 7 October 2023.

• Israeli minister, Amichay Eliyahu, provided a frank explanation for Israeli policy in July, continuing a tradition of dehumanisation of Palestinians and a refusal to recognize their right to their own lands.

• The debate over the scientists’ petition to the IOAA should be viewed as part of a broader struggle for communal harmony and academic freedom within India.
