Rajasthan Assembly Passes ‘Anti-Conversion’ Bill with Severe Penalties

• Rajasthan Assembly passes a bill to prevent religious conversions, punishable by life imprisonment and fines up to ₹1 crore.

• The bill includes provisions against force, fraud, allurement, or coercion.

• Those returning to their “ancestral religion” are exempted from the law.

• Opposition Congress MLAs boycotted the debate and staged a walkout, citing the potential to disrupt communal harmony and create societal tension.

• The Rajasthan Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Bill, 2025, includes provisions for life imprisonment, fines up to ₹1 crore, and confiscation and demolition of properties where mass conversions occur.

• The fines imposed on offenders will be paid to victims, in addition to court-awarded compensation.

• The bill is the latest in a series of laws aimed at curbing alleged forcible religious conversions in Rajasthan, including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh.
