China’s New Aircraft Carrier Crosses Taiwan Strait

• China’s newest aircraft carrier, the Fujian, has sailed through the Taiwan Strait, separating China from Taiwan.

• The sailing could serve as a warning to the U.S. and others against support for Taiwan.

• The carrier is conducting sea trials and conducting training and scientific experiments in the South China Sea.

• The carrier’s activities are not targeting anyone else, and the Taiwan Strait is the normal and most efficient route.

• The U.S. Navy and some allies send warships through the strait periodically to warn Beijing against forceful claims.

• Japan’s military spotted the carrier for the first time on Thursday afternoon.
