Nepal’s First Woman PM: Sushila Karki

• President Ram Chandra Poudel has agreed to dissolve Nepal’s Parliament, a key demand of Gen Z protesters who led to the fall of K.P. Sharma Oli’s government.

• Sushila Karki, the first woman Chief Justice of Nepal, has been named as the Prime Minister.

• Despite the agreement, a dispute over the dissolution of Parliament delayed the announcement.

• The President has held consultations with Karki and other legal experts, facilitated by the Army.

• Karki backed the protesters’ demand for the House to be dissolved, arguing that if Parliament was not dissolved, old parties would retain control and influence.

• The appointment of Karki was a remedial measure taken at a time of crisis, and constitutional expert Bipin Adhikari stated it was “unlikely” to be challenged in court.

• Karki is regarded as an anti-corruption crusader and holds a master’s degree in political science from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, and a law degree from Tribhuvan University.

• After assuming office, Karki will need to form a Cabinet by appointing Ministers to carry out essential functions of government while leading the country toward elections.

• The first two priorities of the interim government should be an independent investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the September 8 carnage, and a criminal investigation into those who carried out attacks and arson against state infrastructure.
