WHO Adds GLP-1 Class of Diabetes Drugs to Essential Medicines List

• The World Health Organization (WHO) has updated its Model Lists of Essential Medicines (EML) to include GLP-1 class of drugs for diabetes and associated comorbidities like obesity.

• The 25th meeting of the WHO Expert Committee on the Selection and Use of Essential Medicines reviewed scientific evidence showing that GLP-1 receptor agonists can help people with type 2 diabetes, especially those with heart or kidney disease.

• The drugs include semaglutide, dulaglutide, liraglutide, and tirzepatide, used as glucose-lowering therapy for adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and obesity.

• The rationale for including these drugs is clear: diabetes and obesity are two of the most urgent health challenges facing the world today.

• The high prices of these drugs limit access to these drugs, which should be financially accessible to everyone.

• Despite the move, some argue that these drugs will only benefit a small number of people in India, while other life-saving, low-cost essential medicines for diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease remain largely unavailable.
