Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Visit to Manipur: Buffer Zones, Unhealed Wounds, and Promises

• N. Birendra Singh, a Manipuri businessman from Imphal, shares his experience of his pregnant daughter being taken to Aizawl in neighbouring Mizoram due to complications.

• The violence between the Kuki-Zo and majority Meitei people in Manipur escalated in May 2023, leading to the establishment of buffer zones to prevent violence.

• The buffer zones, which are segregated by multiple layers of security, have been used to prevent violence between the two communities.

• The division has widened as people who lost their homes and loved ones struggle to return to regular life.

• Around 250 people have been killed and over 60,000 displaced in the battle for land rights and Scheduled Tribe status.

• Prime Minister Modi made two public appearances in the State, announcing several projects worth ₹7,300 crore for Manipur and inaugurating projects worth ₹1,200 crore at Kangla Fort in Imphal.

• The visit was almost cancelled due to incessant rain, but the State administration ensured maximum presence of people along the road.

• Some properties in the buffer zone have been occupied by security forces, with the walls freshly painted and the properties turned into control rooms to monitor social media and drones.
