Indian River Pollution Report: A slight reduction

• The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported an incremental decrease in the number of unfit river sites in India from 815 in 2022 to 807 in 2023.

• However, the number of “most polluted” river locations decreased.

• The CPCB monitors river health data over two-year periods, measuring biological oxygen demand (BOD) of India’s rivers.

• In 2023, there were 296 PRS/locations in 271 rivers, while in 2022, there were 311 PRS/locations in 279 rivers.

• Maharashtra had the highest number of PRS/locations, followed by Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, and Karnataka.

• In 2022, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh had the highest number of ‘Priority 1’ river stretches.

• PRS with a BOD exceeding 30 mg per litre are considered ‘Priority 1’, needing urgent remediation.
