Union Government to Issue New Guidelines to Curb Highway Collapse

• The Union government is addressing concerns over highway collapses in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand due to cloudbursts and floods.

• The government will issue new guidelines focusing on “slope stabilisation” to prevent road collapse during natural disasters.

• The guidelines will mandate slope stabilisation prior to road construction in hilly regions.

• V. Umashankar, Secretary, Road Transport and Highways Ministry, stated that locations underwent slope stabilisation measures withstood the impact of these disasters.

• Damage to National Highways was mostly observed in sections constructed along riverbanks, exacerbated by rising river levels and increasing habitation.
