Supreme Court Questions IIT’s Denial of Transfer for Mental Healthcare

• The Supreme Court has questioned the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, about denying a Scheduled Caste student with borderline personality disorder transfer to the IIT, Delhi.

• The student, who is with his parents, is seeking affordable mental health care at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi.

• The court declared mental health as an integral part of the right to life in July.

• The student’s case was initiated by a Bench of Justices B.V. Nagarathna and R. Mahadevan on September 26, with the case scheduled for October 10.
