A Bangladeshi rights group has called for worldwide action in the killings of tribal people by the army

• A human rights group is advocating for international intervention following the deaths of several tribal members due to firing by the Bangladesh Army in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT).

• The violence erupted as Army personnel targeted activists from Jumma Chhatra Janata, who were protesting against sexual violence incidents involving the Marma community.

• Suhas Chakma of the Rights and Risks Analysis Group (RRAG) criticized the Bangladesh Army for failing to arrest perpetrators of sexual violence and instead attacking peaceful protestors.

• The RRAG claims the Army has introduced “outsiders” to change the demographics of the CHT region, raising concerns of human rights violations.

• The incident will be discussed at the ongoing UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva.

• The protest was a reaction to reported gang rape of a tribal teenager, which intensified tensions in the area.

• Chattogram Range Police Deputy Inspector General Ahsan Habib Palash confirmed that three deceased individuals were taken to Sadar Hospital, while the RRAG reports four fatalities and numerous injuries.

• The RRAG has called upon Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the systematic attacks on indigenous peoples by the Bangladesh Army.

• The CHT has experienced escalating clashes following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024.
