Bengal flood toll reaches 28; CM calls it a man-made disaster

• The death toll from floods in north Bengal has risen to 28, with five additional fatalities reported from Nagrakata block.

• Approximately 500 stranded tourists in the Darjeeling hills have been rescued and brought to Siliguri, with more being saved from Dooars.

• Affected areas include Mirik, Sukhiapokhri, Jorebunglow, and Nagrakata, where infrastructure has been severely damaged, including collapsed bridges and buried villages.

• Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee described the floods as “man-made,” attributing the situation to water from neighboring states, primarily Bhutan and Sikkim.

• Banerjee emphasized the pressing need for an Indo-Bhutan River Commission to manage water flow effectively in north Bengal.

• She criticized the Damodar Valley Corporation for allegedly managing reservoirs poorly and called for better flood management measures from the Union government.

• In response to the disaster, the state government announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased victims and is enhancing relief efforts.

• Banerjee arrived in north Bengal to supervise rescue operations and is planning to construct a temporary bridge over the Balsan river within twenty days.
