The Supreme Court rejects the plea against Telangana’s mandate for a 67% quota

• The Supreme Court rejected a petition contesting the Telangana government’s decision to increase the Backward Classes’ quota in local bodies to 42%, resulting in a total reservation of 67% in the State.

• The petition, filed by Vanga Gopal Reddy, questioned the legality of exceeding the 50% reservation ceiling established by a Supreme Court ruling from 1992.

• The Supreme Court justices allowed Reddy to approach the Telangana High Court regarding the government’s September 26 order.

• Reddy’s petition highlighted that the increase in OBC quota was made prior to the Telangana State Election Commission’s notification for upcoming panchayat elections starting October 9, with polling set for October 23 and 27.

• The petition argued that the enhanced reservation exceeds the 50% limit, infringing on judicial precedents.

• The Telangana government’s move followed attempts to pass the Telangana Backward Classes (Reservations of Seats in Rural and Urban Local Bodies) Bill, 2025, which was not yet enacted.

• Reddy also pointed out that the government’s order violated Section 285A of the Telangana Panchayat Raj Act, 2018, which enforces the 50% ceiling on reservations for local body seats.
