Crimes against minors rise in Assam, Rajasthan, and Kerala

• In 2023, crimes against children saw a significant rise in Assam, Rajasthan, and Kerala, as reported by the National Crimes Records Bureau.

• Assam’s cases surged by nearly 100%, increasing from an average of about 5,100 (2018-2022) to over 10,000 in 2023, primarily due to a crackdown on child marriage under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.

• Rajasthan experienced a 70% increase, with cases rising from approximately 6,200 to over 10,500. This rise is attributed to reclassification of offences under the POCSO Act and actual increases in child kidnapping and abduction cases.

• Kerala’s cases rose by 106%, from over 2,800 to more than 5,900, partly due to improved categorization under the POCSO Act.

• Overall, crimes against children in India increased by 25%.

• The rise in numbers may suggest better reporting rather than a true increase in crime rates, indicating potential improvements in law enforcement and public awareness.
