Syrian government and Kurdish forces achieve a truce following deadly battles

• Syria announced a comprehensive ceasefire with Kurdish forces following a meeting between President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Kurdish leader Mazloum Abdi.

• This meeting occurred after deadly clashes in Aleppo.

• The new Syrian authorities, in power since the ousting of Bashar al-Assad, have rejected Kurdish demands for greater autonomy through a decentralized government.

• Tensions exist due to Kurdish control in northern and northeastern Syria and missed implementations of a prior deal from March 10 regarding the integration of Kurdish civil and military institutions.

• Syrian Defence Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra confirmed the ceasefire and military deployment points for northern and northeastern Syria, stating implementation would begin immediately.
