Discovery of Time Rondour Crystal Phase

• Scientists have discovered a new phase of matter, the time rondeau crystal, where order and disorder coexist in time.

• The phase is related to but distinct from a time crystal, which can be either ordered or disordered.

• A time crystal, predicted in 2012, shows a similar idea in time rather than space.

• In a time rondeau crystal (TRC), the motion is perfectly regular, like a clock ticking at a fixed beat.

• The researchers created a TRC using the spins of carbon-13 atoms in diamond, controlled using microwave pulses.

• The order of the TRC was metastable, enduring for several seconds, far longer than the timescales at which microscopic processes happened in the diamond.

• The discovery expands physicists’ understanding of what ‘order’ means in physics, showing that new, more complex forms of time-wise organization are also possible.

• The TRC opens the door to exploring many new kinds of “temporal orders” lying between perfect order and complete randomness.
